WHO BUILT IT : By the Emperor Ashoka in Maurya dynasty
LOCATED : Sanchi , North-Central of India.
The Stupa are the one of important monuments reflecting gem of Bhuddhist art and architeture. Originally commissioned in third century BCE by Emporer Ashoka this huge hemispherical dome also know as "anda"mean as Egg and the Garbha.
The height of 54 feet consist and the whole of the Great Stupa is encircle by a railing and four gateway, which are richly decorated with relief sculpture depicting Jataka tales, event in the life Buddha and popular mythologycal figures. The Great Stupa (Mahastupa) was built at
the birthplace of Ashoka’s wife, Devi, daughter of a local merchant. in
the village of Sanchi located on an important trade route in the state
of Madya Pradesh, India
A chatra that is an umbrella like structure made are made of stone crowned the hemisphere brick that was surounded by a wooden railing. The Stupa was probably destroyed during the second century BCEin Maurya Empire but later it has been re-constraction and make the stupa nearly double its original size with it more flatted dome using stone slabs that entirely covered by the actual bricks.
A hemispherical brick structure, the Stupa is surrounded by four
gateways called Toranas, each representing love, trust, courage and
peace. These gateways are beautifully crafted and sculptured, some
having its own dramatic narrations and tales associated with them. The
Great Stupa is built over the relics of the Buddha and thus to honour
these relics, the Stupa was crowned with chatra. It is around 37 meters in diameter and over 16 meters high.
For Buddhists, building stupas also has karmic benefits. Karma, a key
component in both Hinduism and Buddhism, is the energy generated by a
person’s actions and the ethical consequences of those actions. Karma
affects a person’s next existence or re-birth. For example, in the Avadana Sutra
ten merits of building a stupa are outlined. One states that if a
practitioner builds a stupa he or she will not be reborn in a remote
location and will not suffer from extreme poverty. As a result, a vast
number of stupas dot the countryside in Tibet (where they are called chorten) and in Burma (chedi).
